What do you get when you take 300 women, deck them out in glitter and glam, load ’em up on candy and drinks, and put them in a room with a throbbing disco beat? Seattle Mom Prom 2017! And me? I was the lucky gal photographing the event.

      Seattle Mom Prom

Seattle moms have been rockin’ the prom since 2010 when, in 2008 Myla Rugge decided it was about time new mothers got to have a party—their very own BIG PARTY (no boys allowed!)—to honor the challenges many women face when they become parents.

Seattle isn’t the only city to host a Mom Prom, in fact there are roughly 90 Mom Proms that take place around the United States. Seattle’s prom  benefits Perinatal Support Washington, an organization that supports women and families experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Moms and women of all ages come and enjoy music and dancing, along with free hair and makeup services, a candy bar, drinks, a photo booth, raffles, and a silent auction.

Let me just say the Seattle Mom Prom is a party with a capital ‘P.’ Seattle women don’t mess around! I had a blast taking photos of women of all sizes and ages wearing everything from heels to Doc Martens, princess ball gowns to slinky sequinned dresses, dancing and singing their hearts out.

This year’s prom took place at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center, a former church located on the cusp of Fremont and Wallingford, that now hosts music and arts events. Mom Prom attendees danced to the beat spun by master Disco DJ Vinnie, sporting a pair  of pink sky-high boots ala Elton John.

I gotta say I was blown away by the energy and awesomeness of the women in that room! There is no way you could have been at that event and not feel proud to be a woman, and maybe also a mom, supporting a great cause. I had a blast!
